LCD TV - The Latest In Viewing

Liquid Crystal Display is all about flat panel television technology. The technology of liquid crystal display has penetrated our everyday life in everyday things like wristwatches, mobile phones, calculators, computer monitors and high definition television. The use is growing rapidly and sales of LCD TV are expected to exceed 4 million in America alone.

There are some distinct advantages of LCD panels over other kinds of display technologies. They are slimmer and hardly go beyond 3.5`` in depth. These are lighter also and best of all they draw less power - only about 60% of the power consumed by plasma displays. LCD televisions do not spew electromagnetic waves that are harmful.

There are drawbacks of course - viewing angle is restricted, contrast ratio is limited and time of display response may cause concern. The biggest frown of all is caused by the price. Although it is falling but still it is considerably higher than its plasma counterpart.

LCD displays comprises mainly of sheets of polarized glass sheets - two in number. A liquid crystal solution is sandwiched between these. These liquid crystals are very specific that causes them to act as shutters that open or shut out entry of light as the need arises depending upon flow of electric current. This current passing through the liquid crystals is regulated by voltage that is applied between the glass sheets through the electrodes that are transparent. These form a network having rows on one direction of the panel and columns on the other side representing the pixels or picture elements.

What are these liquid crystals? Matter can be found in three states - solid, liquid and gas. Nevertheless there are substances that exist in a state that is neither liquid nor solid at any one point of time. The behaviour of these molecules is also peculiar. They keep to their orientation like those in a solid and yet they shuffle around taking up various positions like the molecules of a liquid. Thus these liquid crystals can be termed neither solid nor liquid though they have more of an affinity for the latter - that is the liquid state.

There are various types of liquid crystals with each having its distinct properties. Those used in LCD panels are termed nematic-phase liquid crystals. The molecules are arranged in a particular fashion having distinctive pattern.

LCD display systems are of two types - passive and active matrix. The former is more complicated, produces the best pictures and consequently the price also goes up. During the manufacturing stage bad-pixels pose a serious problem. Innumerable controlling transistors are required on the glass substrata to control each sub-pixel. A typical wide screen panel will require 3.1 million transistors. Any one faulty transistor cannot be replaced and are known as dead or stuck pixels. If one is permanently off then a black spot will show and if it is on then a white spot will show. If it crosses a certain number the whole unit will have to be discarded.

It was during the early 2000`s that LCD flat panels took over the television market from the typical CRT`s. The basis of the technology is founded on the characteristics of polarized light. The thin semi liquid crystal gel trapped between two slim polarized sheets is divided into pixels.

There is hectic activity to overcome the technological difficulties to make the set affordable. So the LCD TV has to be made affordable to hit the headlines of success.

Video Conferencing: Convenience as well as Effectiveness in One

There are times wherein your physical presence is important. Nevertheless, there is just no way for you to be present at the designated time and venue of the conference. So what do you do? You call the person up to inform him you could not be present. The conference is important, but it's impossible for you to be in 2 places at the same time. But that predicament might now be conveniently addressed with the use of video conferencing facilities. But what's videoconferencing? Video conferencing is an interactive combination between two or countless teams from various places making use of the World Wide Web, video, and audio technology in real-time.

In order for a video conference to function, basic components like audio and video inputs (microphones, cams, webcams), audio and video outputs (speakers, headphones, PC monitors, projectors), together with the major control system that could allow information transfer should be present. Nevertheless, for the discussion or conference to be more lively and interactive, alternative programs as in IMs, Flash technology, Java scripts, and many more, would permit attendees to talk not just verbally, but they will be able to interchange information and other related information by sharing files, view slide shows, share videos, and utilize a common whiteboard where every participant could draw or write on. Numerous videoconferencing amenities have all the equipments as well as applications and many more according to your necessity.

There are many videoconferencing companies that give videoconferencing services fashioned to your necessity. They can set up a meeting involving a group of three to ten persons to a meeting of up to more than a hundred participants in various geographic places. Prices can range depending on the devices, programs, and applications employed. You may either prefer a uniform cost conference calling service or a per-minute calling program. Yet you may always start your own videoconference if you have the fundamental technologies for video conferencing.

The teleconferencing market has become a booming endeavor since companies as well as agencies big and small, or even private individuals, are now acknowledging the benefits of video conferencing. The firm could save a couple of vital tour time and travel fees through this technology. And it is so convenient for those who have career primarily in the house. Yet not only is this beneficial to business people and workplaces. Everyone may discover perfect use of this device for faster communication and interchange of information by public video conference rooms which has now become readily accessible for those who don't have the appropriate programs at home.

With the utilization of videoconferencing technology, things have become less complex and easier to do. For a professor, for instance, rather than taking a plane ride from New Jersey to a school in New York to attend a speaking engagement, he could utilize video phones to present his talk or discussion to a group of students in real time and still be able to entertain their inquiries without having to cancel his following class. For clear reasons, this process is now being widely recognized. Even family and pals can now set Internet gatherings. But physical presence will not take over technology regardless of how advanced it is.

Knowing Your Cell Phone

No one doubts that cell phone is one of the most used consumer electronics worldwide. But have you ever asked yourself how does a cell phone work? What is a cell phone?

The amazing fact about a cell phone is that it is a radio - a very special one. The gurus in the line are Bell (1876), Tesla (1880) followed by Marconi and Bose (late 19th century). It is known that the concept of cell phone was produced by Bell Laboratories with the permission of FCC (Federal Communication Commission), and had everything to do with broadcasting and sending a radio message out over the airwaves.

In cell phone technology cells divide the city, allowing for the facility to be frequently reused throughout the city. Millions can simultaneously avail of it.

In devices that are half-duplex (walkie-talkies and CB radios) two communicators use a single frequency. This means that at a single point of time only one can talk. On the other hand a cell phone being a full duplex tool has two frequencies: one for talking and the other for listening. Thus a real-life conversation can take place. Cell phones glide through 1,664 channels whereas the walkie-talkie group has to be content with only 40. The walkie-talkie and the CB radio respectively reaches out to 1 mile and 5 miles but the cell phones, because of their ability to switch from cell to cell can cover incredible distances, even while driving at top speed. Each cell is approximately 10 square miles.

The cells are usually depicted as hexagons. The unique frequency tiers avoid all possibilities of cross connections. Generally a carrier of cell phone can avail of 832 radio frequencies in a city. Each cell phone uses 395 voice channels (per carrier), that is 56 voice channels per cell. It means 56 persons can simultaneously say hello on the phone. In digital transmission technology the number of channels increases even further. For each cell phone 168 channels is available.

The distinctiveness about cell phones is their low-power transmitters. Most use 2 strengths: 0.6 watts and 0.3 watts. In comparison it is 4 watts for CB radios. The advantage of this is that it can be frequently reused consuming less power. Cell phones are battery operated. The lower the power the smaller the battery. This makes the set handy and light.

For cellular technology a city requires a good number of base stations. This can run into some hundreds of towers. But because of the huge number of users costs per head remain very low. Each carrier has one centre called MTSO or Mobile Telephone Switching Office. Its work is to see to all the connections.

Cell phones each have codes, which enable identification of the phone, its user and its server. When someone tries to reach a phone the first thing is to locate the SID (system identification code) on the control channel, that is find out if the phone is within range or not. A message relays no-service when it is out of range. But when the SID is received then the next step is to find out whether the call is within its own home zone or not. The phone also tracks the location of the phone called on a database. Thus the MTSO knows the cell of the called number and caller. Communication is transmitted through the control channel and it is this link that activates the phone being called and calling.

These are the facts of a cell phone as explained for a layman. It is always advisable to know at least the basics of a cell phone since it has become an integral part of our life.
